Fury over Edgeware BP building Neighbours say spirit of resource consent breached „„ By Fraser Walker-Pearce THIS IS the view that one of the Edgeware residents who fought hard to stop a petrol station expanding sees every day. Kazu Kano said his deck was damaged by BP’s work, and the 20m long, 4.9m high white wall constructed on the other side of his fence reflects the sun straight onto his house. Mr Kano is a Cornwall St resident who fought to oppose BP’s developments in August, but an independent commissioner granted consent. Now neighbours are being reassured that BP will adhere to its consent and will not affect neighbouring properties. The developments include adding four more pumps, 12 car parks and a larger forecourt. Contractors on behalf of BP also removed a line of mature trees that were partially blocking the effects of the wall on Mr Kano’s house. Mr Kano’s neighbour Rob Hull said this is in breach of BP’s resource consent. “Our argument is that it was approved because it wasn’t going to be having a big effect on the neighbouring properties but

it is having a big effect and we requested more mitigation. BP just responded with no, which is vindictive and bullying, they just said we will just proceed,â€? he said. After residents met with a BP representative and two city council representatives including city councillor Pauline Cotter earlier in the month, residents asked BP to mitigate their works by planting more trees and painting the wall a different and less reflective colour “like a light green,â€? Mr Hull said. “Everyone agreed it was having a big effect. We asked them to mitigate the effects the wall was having, he said he’d take those concerns back . . . we all left the meeting and within a day they’d changed their mind,â€? Mr Hull said. •Turn to page 5

NOTHING SAYS summer like heading down with the children to the local outdoor swimming pool. Finally, almost six years since the February 22, 2011, earthquake closed many of our community pools, all will be open this summer, including Abberley Park. It’s also sporting a new look, with a marine-themed mural at the bottom of the paddling pool. For the second year in a row, Clearwater has been named best course at the annual World Golf Awards in Portugal (pgs 6 and 7). Finally, former Burnside High student Alice Zeimann is off to the University of Minnesota on a volleyball scholarship. She tells sports reporter Gordon Findlater that she is going to have to take a “massive step up” in the US. All the best Alice. Hei kona, Shelley Robinson

Paddling pool opens tomorrow

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding ST ALBANS’ families will now be able to take a dip in the paddling pool at Abberley Park to splash away summer heat. The paddling pool was first scheduled to open last Saturday but the city council will now open it at 3.30pm tomorrow. The paddling pool has been upgraded with new marinethemed murals painted on the bottom of the pool. It will be the first summer since the February 2011 earthquake that all of the city’s outdoor swimming pools will be opened. Paddling pools at the Botanic Gardens, Edgar MacIntosh Park, Papanui, and Woodham Park, Avonside, are also scheduled to open for the summer. It was originally planned for the paddling pools to open at Show Weekend, but wet and windy spring weather caused delays. The city council’s western area recreation manager Nigel Cox said previously the pools were painted each year before opening

District Health Board opposed the city council’s Long Term Plan of not replacing the paddling pool at Abberley Park when it reached the end of its life. It was reported last year in the Long Term Plan Abberley Park’s

paddling pool, along with Woodham Park and Edgar MacIntosh Park, would not be replaced. The Nor’West News reported in September residents were concerned by the amount of green space the park would lose as a re-

sult of an expansion and upgrade of one of the playgrounds. From the process, a community group named Friends of Abberley Park was formed to build a network of people who care about the protection of the park and to provide an avenue of communication with the city council. Councillor Pauline Cotter said one of the reasons the group was set up was to protect the paddling pool. She said it was important to get the community involved in the project so they can have small fundraisers along the way to support the paddling pool. St Albans Residents’ Association co-chair Emma Twaddell (left) said if the city council is not willing to keep the asset on then the community will take it on themselves to manage it. She said the community is aware the pool could be closed over the next 10 years and they do not want it to happen. “It would be nice to keep that in the forefront of people’s mind so it can’t slip away and then all of a sudden 10 years are up and we lose the pool,” she said.

Long week for firefighters

&

McMaster Heap

Veterinary practice

RefeRReal eye cases

The surgery was a success and 4 weeks on, Penny is a happy, active, normal wee puppy with a prosthetic right eye and normal vision out of the left eye.

Recently Dr Steve Heap examined 20 week old Beagle puppy called “Penny”, who presented as a referral with a painful, partially closed right eye. Penny had unfortunately been scratched in the eye by a slightly grumpy older resident cat. Steve diagnosed a cataract in this eye, with phacouveitis and serous glaucoma all in a little puppy. Glaucoma is when there is increased intraocular pressure causing pain and discomfort. Steve had discussed with the owners that this right eye had a hopeless prognosis for vision. Topical eye medications were instigated to control the pain and inflammation and rising pressure in the eye. Steve also discussed that if these medications didn’t hold this condition, Penny’s eye would need to be enucleated. Pretty quickly it was noticed that the right eye had deteriorated beyond medical therapy. Enucleation ( removal) of the eye and placement of an intrascleral prosthesis ( glass bead eye) was surgically undertaken to relieve Penny from a life of medication and pain.

Another interesting ophthalmology case for Dr Steve Heap came from the SPCA. A 5 month old stray sneezing kitten was examined by Steve and found to have no lateral upper eyelids in both the left and right eyes, a condition called Bilateral Upper Lateral Eyelid Agenisis. As a result the eyes were sore, dry and constantly irritated by hair rubbing on the cornea (the sensitive clear window of the eye). Steve trialled lubricants and antibiotic ointments in the eyes in the hope the eyes would be comfortable long term, but this wasn’t the case. The kitten was taken to surgery and Steve carefully and intricately created upper eyelids by harvesting strips of skin taken from below the lower lids. All in all a successful outcome for this wee kitten who will be rehomed and avoid a lifetime of medication.

Fire risk management officer Mark Thomas talks about the impact of last week’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake It felt like deja vu all over again just after midnight last Monday morning as the shaking that woke me went on, and on, and on. Since then, it’s become clear that Christchurch has dodged most of the consequences of the 7.8 magnitude quake. Which is just as well. I’m not sure that those still suffering from six years of earthquakerelated stress would be able to handle starting all over again. Part of the heroic stoicism being shown by the people of Kaikoura can be attributed to the fact this level of destruction is new for them. They are going to need every bit of help the rest of us in the region can provide in the next few years. In Christchurch on the night, a couple of fire alarm systems malfunctioned and the seaside brigades of Sumner, Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour spent time evacu-

ating vulnerable people in those hours that a tsunami was a possibility. Otherwise, the city was largely spared. Our Regional Command Centre at Kilmore St has been operating 24/7 this week to support our brigades in the affected areas. Firefighters and Urban Search And Rescue teams from Christchurch were flown to relieve the ex-

hausted Kaikoura brigade. Others have gone to Waiau. Elsewhere our national headquarters in Wellington has been evacuated until the building is cleared as sound and firefighters there have been involved in that city’s earthquake and weather issues. Not a great week for New Zealand.

Not all pets with enucleated eyes need to have prosthetics placed. Steve will often enucleate an eye and then stitch the lids together. This ends up cosmetically looking fine. Due to Penny’s very young age, her owners felt a prosthetic eye would look more pleasing on their cute wee pup.

Airport helps out community groups COMMUNITY groups around the city have received a helping hand from the Christchurch International Airport to continue their work in the city. Nine community groups received grants from the Christchurch Airport Community Fund. The groups included 180 Degrees Trust, Birthright Canterbury Trust, Christchurch Cathedral Choir, City Parks Community Patrol, DrugARM Trust, Halswell Hall Inc, Listen! Our Voices Count, Oak Development Trust and Papanui-Merivale Plunket. The airport’s chief aeronautical and commercial officer Justin Watson said the fund is made of coins dropped into collections boxes around the airport terminal. “We collect the money and convert the foreign currencies – as many as 14 at a time – then top up the money with a sizeable donation of our own, to support our communities – especially those which have viable projects under way but not enough funding to complete them,” he said. Mr Watson said the latest nine recipients include a radio programme for disabled citizens, a group which runs a community hall, and a group whose

He said the grant will help pay

been volunteers. This grant will mean we can cover some of their costs,” she said. Mr Watson said the nine Community Fund recipients were chosen from a record number of applicants. He said they all demonstrated outreach activities into Christchurch communities, as well as sincere concern and caring for the people they work with.

•From page 1 An offer was made to Mr Kano and his family by BP to re-stain their deck and replace gravel at the house because of the impact the work next door was having. BP spokeswoman Shelley Brady said it has gone “above and beyond” what was agreed as part of the resource consent. “It was unfortunate to discover that a small amount of paint spray had blown on to a neighbour’s deck on a particularly windy day recently. BP has spoken to the impacted neighbour and, of course, we will be cleaning the section of the deck impacted in order to return it to its original condition,” she said. Cr Cotter said BP is keeping to their consent, so at the moment nothing can be done. “They’ve had it granted, they’re meeting their conditions, and they say we feel that we’ve done enough. There’s nothing anyone can do now,” she said.

Clearwater has been named

WINNER: Clearwater Golf Course has won an international award for the second year in a row.

CLEARWATER GOLF course has been named the best course in New Zealand for the second consecutive year at the annual World Golf Awards in Portugal. It won over nominations from nearly all of Golf Tourism New Zealand’s marquee golf courses. World Golf Awards serve to celebrate and reward excellence in golf tourism, world class courses and golf destinations. Votes are made by professionals working within the golf travel and tourism industry – senior executives, travel buyers, tour operators, agents and media professionals. Votes may also be cast by the public (golf tourism consumers). World Golf Awards managing director Christopher Frost said: “It is an honour for us to recognise Clearwater golf course with the title of New Zealand’s leading golf course. With golf hospitality on an unstoppable rise around the world, with more people choosing to play each year, it is destinations such as this which set the global benchmark for the industry. My sincere congratulations to eve-

rybody at Clearwater golf course and the best of luck for the rest of the summer season in New Zealand.” On top of collecting this prestigious award for the second year in a row, following on from Cape Kidnappers win in 2014, it achieved a rare double by taking out, also for the second year in a row, the title of best course in Oceania beating the best from Australia (Royal Melbourne West) and Fiji (Natadola Bay). Said Clearwater general manager Andrew Bell (left): “We are extremely honoured the World Golf Awards have again recognised the focus that the Clearwater golf course team put in to all aspects of our visitor experience. “The course itself has an outstanding record as the premier venue for international professional championship golf with 15 events staged since the course opened in 2002. By focusing on treating every visitor as a member of the club for the day we believe that we now offer a unique product which the travel and tourism industry are clearly supporting.”

CHALLENGE: A large crowd watches Lydia Ko compete in the 2015 New Zealand Women’s Golf Open at Clearwater. Ko won the event. Clearwater will no longer host the women’s event.

Ryan Brandenburg of Tourism New Zealand said: “We are thrilled that for the second year in a row Clearwater has been recognised as one of the best golf destinations in the world. As our country’s golf tourism continues to grow, it is vital that our courses meet

and exceed the needs of international visitors, and clearly Clearwater is delivering.” New Zealand also beat Australia and Fiji for the Best Golfing Destination in Oceania. A feat noticed by keen golfer Prime Minister and

Minister of Tourism John Key: “I am extremely pleased to see our New Zealand golf courses being recognised on the international stage by our tourism partners in these awards. The growth in our inbound golf travellers has positive spin-offs.”

It was announced last week that Clearwater will no longer host the New Zealand Woman’s Open. The New Zealand Women’s Open had been held in Christchurch since 2009, but it will now move to the new Windross Farm course in South Auckland.

Mike Sinclair has lived such an interesting life that local author Kerry Swanson wrote a book on it. The 64-year-old spent 26 years tinkering with grand prix winning motor-cycles with ‘King’ Kenny Roberts. Fraser Walker-Pearce talked to him and Mr Swanson You’ve managed to get this book Mike Sinclair – King Kenny’s Spanner Man written about you Mike. It’s 330 pages, how have you managed that? Yes, I know it’s pretty big. It’s an indication of about 26 years in the professional motor-biking arena. So were you born riding motor bikes or did you grow into it? No not really, my family doesn’t have a background of motor bike riding, I just got an interest when I was 10 or 11, my mother bought me a plastic model and that was it, motor bikes were for me. And from then on I was always out of school as quick as I could be to get on the bike and on the race track. I raced here in Christchurch and won the 250cc national championship in 1972, but then I got more into the mechanical side of things, more than the riding. Did riding ever take you to overseas competitions and races? At that time you could buy basically a grand prix level bike and go and race in the world championships and be competitive. So quite a lot of the Christchurch guys were doing things like that. One of my mates was at that level and went off to Europe in 1976 and I went off to help him. Were you his pit crew at that stage? Yes kind of. In those days it was just the two of you if you were lucky, otherwise you’d be doing everything yourself. I did 1974 on the same basis with another Christchurch rider. We did the United States season in ’74 and then onto the European season in ’76. From that I got to meet a few of the world’s fastest guys in a competition in Christchurch, sponsored by Marlboro, and was therefore known all around the world. Through that we got to

SCHOOLS Breens Intermediate pupils returned from their camp in Waipara tired but more confident in their outdoor skills. Last week the pupils travelled north of the city to experience a series of challenging activities. Principal Nikki Clarke said the overnight stay in tents added to the outdoor experience. “[The pupils were] buzzing with renewed confidence after their recent outdoor education camps at Waipara. Children were encouraged to be brave and bold in a series of challenging physical and teamwork activities,” she said.

DREAMY SHOW: The production of Alice in Wonderland will be a “dreamlike interpretation” of the Lewis Carroll novel. (From left) Brigit Moston, Sarah Lawrence, Sarah Liddell, Amelie Spinks as Alice, Annabelle Jones, Kareena Singh and Georgina Scott.

Costumes a highlight of Rangi Ruru production “BEAUTIFUL costumes and a dreamlike interpretation.” That’s how the director of theatre arts at Rangi Ruru described the upcoming junior school production of Alice in Wonderland. The production opens tomorrow at 7pm at the Merivale Lane Theatre and closes on Saturday night. Theatre arts director Peter Rutherford said this fresh adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s familiar classic incorporates dance, a mixture of live and recorded music and beautiful costumes.

“With the performing arts building, which includes specialist staff and music, dance and acting spaces, we are fortunate at Rangi Ruru to be able to produce a show of this standard,” he said. Mr Rutherford said Rangi Ruru’s production focuses on the dreamlike nature of the Alice in Wonderland story. Junior students studying visual art, textile technology and design worked on the set elements for the show. The cast includes more than 70 students in years 9 and 10.

PADDLING: Breens Intermediate pupils went kayaking in Waipara.

The lead role of Alice will be portrayed by four students – Amelie Spinks from year 9, and Rachel McSweeney, Sarah Liddell and Sarah Lawrence, all in year 10. A crew of more than 40 staff and students are working on the production. • Tickets to Rangi Ruru’s production of Alice in Wonderland are available at http://www.eventfinda. co.nz/2016/rangi-rurujunior-production-alice-inwonderland/christchurch

FUN: The pupils had many challenging activities to partake in while on their camp.

Burnside volleyballer snapped up by University of Minnesota By Gordon Findlater FORMER BURNSIDE High School student Alice Zeimann has secured a scholarship to play at a top United States women’s volleyball college. Zeimann will join the University of Minnesota in January, where she will play under one of the world’s top coaches, who also hails from Christchurch. The 18-year-old had the chance to meet Minnesota coach Hugh McCutcheon earlier this year when he spoke at a seminar at the Papanui Club. “He’s achieved so much, it was great to hear what he had to say on a personal level and to understand his coaching style,” said Zeimann. McCutcheon represented New Zealand at both indoor and beach volleyball before beginning an even more successful coaching career. After coaching stints at US college and European professional league level,

he was named head coach of the US men’s volleyball team in 2005. The 47-year-old led them to an Olympic gold medal at the Beijing games in 2008. He then took on the head coaching role with the US women’s team and helped them to a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Zeimann, a 1.82m outside hitter, has represented New Zealand at both age group and senior level. She won three straight secondary school beach volleyball titles with Burnside while also winning national indoor titles with the school in 2015 and 2016. She is no stranger to success in New Zealand. However, she’s expecting Minnesota to be a massive step up. “I’ll be going in as a small fish in a very big pond. It will be really good for me because I’m a very competitive person. I’ll also be able to learn a lot from the other athletes,” said Zeimann. Another adjustment will be

getting used to the popularity of the sport at Minnesota. Zeimann will go from competing in front of a handful of people at secondary school level in New Zealand to Minnesota’s home stadium, which attracts more than 5000 people for big games.

Zeimann has been hard at work getting into prime condition before making the step up. She has been working on her strength and condition on a regular basis with Ken Franks – father of All Blacks Owen and Ben Franks – at the

Franks Brothers Gym. She’s also been staying sharp on the court by training with her former Burnside High School team. After recently competing for New Zealand at the World Under-19 Beach Volleyball Championships in Cyprus, Zeimann will now concentrate on indoor volleyball, but can see herself pursuing the beach code after college. “It’s a much better pathway to make world champs, Commonwealth Games or even the Olympics. The other option is to get a contract to play indoor volleyball in Europe,” said Zeimann. She leaves for the University of Minnesota in January and is looking at majoring in journalism.

Rangi students recognised for sporting achievements

Brittany Wang won the Best All-Round Junior Sportswoman award. Wang was a member of the Rangi first XI Hockey team that finished fifth in this year’s Federation Cup and also represented Canterbury at under-15 level. She also competed in the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championships, winning gold in the junior girls triple jump and silver in the team relay. Wang has also represented New Zealand in trampolining.

RANGI RURU Girls’ School held its inaugural sports awards last week. The evening lasted just over an hour and highlighted the achievements of students throughout the year. Six major awards were handed out on the evening. Students who have made representative teams were also recognised, including nine students who went on to represent New Zealand. New Zealand rowing eight representative and former Rangi student Francie Turner was the evening’s guest speaker. Awards: Contribution to Coaching - Georgia Thomson Contribution to Administration/Officiating - Holly Reid Best All-Round Year 7/8 Sportswoman - Eve Weston Best All-Round Junior Sportswoman Brittany Wang Best All-Round Senior Sportswoman Margot Willis Sports Team of the Year - U16 Coxed Rowing 8 Crew

Margot Willis won the Best AllRound Senior Sportswoman. Willis is the senior school champion in both athletics and the cross-country. She won the 400m and placed second in the 200m at the Canterbury athletics champs and went on to compete at the South Island champs. The year 13 student is co-captain of the first XI hockey team this year and is a member of the New Zealand Junior Blacksticks squad.

FOCUS ON HEALTH Taking the The importance of pain out of good blood Christmas pressure! If you, or someone you know, suffers from painful arthritis, night cramps or swollen feet and hands, a gift of an Aircycle could be just the Christmas present you are looking for. It’s small enough to post and simple to use. This NZ invention has helped thousands of New Zealanders for years. “My leg muscles are so much stronger and my circulation greatly improved.” reported a 93 year old. “ And I can sleep the night undisturbed by cramps – a real bonus!” . It’s a great circulation booster, reduces swollen ankles, helps relieve joint and muscle pain, strengthen leg muscles to support joints and improve balance and mobility. “After a 26 hour flight, I skipped off the plane with no ankle swelling”, said Tess Rowley. An Aircycle could be the best present you buy this year – not only taking the pain out of Christmas but giving someone lasting health benefits and years of pain relief. Aircycles have a lifetime guarantee, are available from pharmacies, Diabetes Christchurch, Aspire Canterbury and More Mobility. For more information visit www.aircycle.co.nz , phone 04 569 5013 or post $39.90 (p&p included) to Aircycle, PO Box 45105, Waterloo, Lower Hutt.

Blood Pressure is an indicator of cardiovascular as well as overall health. Healthy blood flow is vital for a healthy body as the blood plasma transports nutrients, hormones, metabolic waste, oxygen and CO2 throughout the body. An area in the brain keeps check on blood flow to ensure health of all cells and the organs they make up. If blood flow is reduced the brain will try to normalise blood flow by adjusting the heart strength, frequency (Pulse Rate) as well as the width of blood vessels all via the nervous system. Over a period of time the blood pressure may keep increasing due to the deterioration of blood flow. A higher B/P is not ideal and is considered a major risk factor for strokes, aneurysm, organ failure and heart failure. Even moderate elevation of B/P is considered a major reason for shorter life expectancy. If we can maintain our B/P in the normal range our overall health will be improved. These include denture cleaners, brushes and denture baths for soaking the dentures. One product Ryan particularly recommends is Caldent denture cleaner, as it is non-abrasive and effectively removes stains, calculus and plaque.

“It works wonders,” he says. “Years of stains and plaque can be removed with this product.” Customers don’t have to make a special trip to Dentures Plus to purchase it, they can order it through the Dentures Plus website, www. denturesplus.co.nz, for delivery anywhere in Christchurch and throughout the country, Ryan says. People may need to get full or partial dentures for various reasons, such as accidents or tooth decay, and Ryan and his two other clinicians, Nicole Yee and Thomas Gu, will ensure the whole process goes as smoothly as possible. “We provide the right treatment plan and solution for our patients. Once we have seen them, we make up the dentures before their appointment with the dentist for the extraction,” Ryan says. “After the teeth are removed, the dentures are fitted immediately – this gives much better results.” A follow-up appointment after a few months will enable the clinician to check that the dentures are fitting correctly and make any necessary adjustments. Ryan also advises that people with existing dentures should have them checked every two to three years to make sure they are not starting to wear, which could cause discomfort in the future. A free, no-obligation check-up

will determine if the dentures need some attention, or even replacing. Dentures Plus, 396 Innes Road, is open Monday to Thursday 8am-5pm and Friday 8am-2pm. To make an appointment phone 385 5517. For the Christmas break they will close on Friday, December 23 and re-open on Wednesday, January 4.

Cramping pain in my leg when I try to walk

to use the gym by themselves to keep on top of their claudication. At Physical Sense they have been going strong with the Intermittent Claudication class ever since the first class eight years ago. You can try the classes for FREE. If you want to continue and you have WINZ support, WINZ usually pays for the classes (as WINZ is VERY supportive of these classes).

Intermittent Claudication “This is different from “night-cramps” Ietje van Stolk, (physiotherapist at Physical Sense and the centre for Senior Well-being) explains. This kind of cramping (sometimes called “window -shopping legs”) is triggered by normal exertion of the leg muscles and is typically caused by obstruction of the arteries. Sufferers have to find themselves a regular excuse to stop for a while to allow the blood flow to reach the cramped up muscles. The official name for this condition is Intermittent Claudication. Claudication is pain and/or cramping in the lower leg due to inadequate blood flow to the muscles. The pain usually causes the person to limp. The word “claudication” comes from the Latin “claudicare” meaning to limp. Claudication typically is felt while walking, and subsides with rest. It is commonly referred to as “intermittent” claudication because it comes and goes with exertion and rest. In severe claudication, the pain is also felt at rest. It is a painful condition that really “cramps people’s lifestyle”. The pain free walking distance tends to get shorter as the condition progresses. If you suffer from this condition it is crucial to understand that the body actually finds a way to

increase the blood flow to the legs IF THE DEMAND is there. It is like every thing in the body……..”use it or lose it”. Unfortunately many people with this condition end up in a vicious cycle; the pain stops the walking, and the lack of walking increases the problem. Exercise is recommended to greatly reduce symptoms and to increase pain free walking distance. Eight years ago on request of the vascular nurse in Christchurch hospital, Physical Sense started a two weekly circuit for Intermittent Claudication patients. The pilot program started with 50 clients. • 82% of all clients, experienced improvement in their walking distance • Quite a number of clients doubled their walking distance, for some it even became limitless. • After a year 88% of clients were still active • There was an exceptionally low dropout rate of only 8% • The 18% who did not notice a difference in relation to their walking distance still enjoyed all the other benefits of exercise (to heart, lungs, sugar levels, bone health,

balance and mood etc.) People always start in a group, so they get the benefit of a guided introduction to more exercise and the use of the gym. In the groups we are looking at 50-80+ year olds that are giving their legs a workout by using steppers, treadmills, stationary bikes and other exercise stations. That way they also benefit from working out with people who suffer the same problems. “It is amazing the support and wisdom people receive from each other” Ietje says. In this “circuit setup” every client can work in their own tempo, and people simply sit down and have a rest when the “cramping in the leg” becomes too much. Some people stay in the group and some choose

I also asked Simon about the current problems related to safe lead removal. Simon says. “Because there is no lead dust created through sanding, or lead vapour generated by heat guns, lead poisoning is no longer a concern” I asked Simon what the Stripping Expo is all about and he said, “The Stripping Expo is a DIY paint and varnish stripping exhibition travelling regionally throughout New Zealand.” “The purpose of the Stripping Expo is to show Cooper’s stripping any paint or varnish from any surface.” Simon says our next expo is at the Bridge Club in Christchurch, “We have on exhibition some impressive before and after displays, as well as practical one on one demonstrations.” Come and meet the family, chat to us about your project, bring along some photos of what you want to strip and we’ll select a similar old piece of paint or varnish to strip with you.” But what Simon really wants you to do is actually bring along your project, or a piece of it, no matter how big or small. bring a chair, a drawer, unscrew a window sash, a door, a piece of moulding or even your project car or boat and they will really show you what Cooper’s is capable of doing.

“I was sick of how difficult it was to use the current strippers, and knew sanding was a complete waste of time,” Simon says. “Why sand when the person who made the item, sanded it in the first place? I was determined to make a product that was easy to use and made sanding obsolete.” Simon is Kiwi-born and bred and as a dairy farmer’s son he was taught at a young age to work things out, rather than to accept things as they are. At high school he developed a passion for working with wood and his love of fine furniture began. Once Simon developed his own stripper, the word got out and today, over 30 years later, Simon’s products and methods are now known as Cooper’s Strip Club; a Simon Cooper from the Cooper’s strip club complete DIY restoration By Dave Hare, system, family owned and operated, available Coopers was started by Simon Cooper in the early throughout New Zealand and Australia. 80’s.
